San Francisco’s Civic Center ranks among the most beautiful urban public spaces in America, but since this is San Francisco, after all, even this place contains some odd elements. The plaza in front of and across the street from City Hall consists of tightly packed sand, and has hosted quite a variety of events in recent months: a performance by the Red Hot Chili Peppers at a corporate event; a fundraising dinner; an X-Games extreme sports event sponsored by Mountain Dew; and a tiny little affair featuring the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants Professional Baseball Club and over one million of their closest friends.
So these weird geometric indentations into the hardened ground of the plaza probably have a good reason for existing (close to actual size):

Does anyone have any idea what the heck created these? I live in San Francisco and this is too strange even for me.
